Momina Afrede, DO

Momina was born and raised in Connecticut and is proud to serve her home state. She is honored to have graduated salutatorian from Portland High School, receive a full scholarship to UConn’s Honors Program where she earned her Bachelors of Science in Biological Sciences. She then went on to complete a Masters in Healthcare Administration and Leadership in Illinois at Chicago Medical School/Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science. Momina then earned her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine and went on to complete her Family Medicine Residency Training with Northwell Health in Long Island New York.

Prior to joining ECHN, Dr. Afrede researched extensively while at UConn’s Honors program for a way to make injectable insulin into an oral form to make injections a thing of the past for type 1 diabetics. She wrote and published a book on her research called “Chemical and Biological triggers for the Improved Intercalation and Release of Glucose Oxidase in the Galleries of α-Zirconium Phosphate Nanolayers for a Noninvasive Oral Alternative to Insulin Drug Therapies”. She hopes one day there will be a cure to type 1 diabetes as well as other chronic conditions. She also fundraised and gathered medications with a Global Medical Brigade Team of nurses, physicians, and premedical students and then traveled with the team to Honduras to give free medical care to villagers in need. She also enjoyed volunteering for many years as an EMT in Connecticut.

When Momina is not practicing medicine, she enjoys going for walks, hiking, bowling, or spending time talking with family and friends. Momina is very impressed by how kind and welcoming everyone at ECHN is. She is looking forward and honored to serving her home state of Connecticut as a physician.
