Director’s Welcome

Sabesan “Saby” Karuppiah, MD, MPH, FAAFP

Program Director, Eastern Connecticut Family Medicine Residency and Transitional Year Residency

Associate Professor, University of New England College of Medicine

Our mission is to provide the best educational environment and experience to prepare residents to be highly skilled family physicians to better serve our community. Throughout their training at Eastern Connecticut Family Medicine residency, our residents are given extensive learning opportunities in both inpatient and outpatient medicine, with special attention to preparing them to practice the full spectrum of family medicine.

We are a community-based, university-affiliated unopposed family medicine program located in Manchester, Connecticut, one of the best places to live and practice that you can find. We have a talented, motivated and compassionate group of residents, staff and faculty, outstanding inpatient and outpatient training, a unique longitudinal curriculum, and a commitment to residency education and to outstanding patient care. ECFMR is certified as a Level 3 NCQA (National Committee for Quality Assurance) Patient-Centered Medical Home. We are passionate about family medicine and invite you to learn about our program.

We are enthusiastic about the future of Family Medicine and see the need for family physicians to fill the role as medical leaders in the communities they serve at both the local and national level. We also believe that the foundation of the health of our nation and world must be built on well-trained family physicians serving in the key role as primary care physicians. Therefore, the scope of Family Medicine will continue to evolve as the needs of our communities dictate.  The addition of our Fellowship in Osteopathic Neuromusculoskeletal medicine and our areas of Concentration in Evidence Based medicine are clear examples of ways in which we are leading the way in re-shaping the vision of Family Medicine into the 21st century.

Our residency trains confident and dynamic family physicians by emphasizing family centered practice at Family Health Care Center and Manchester Family Physicians and outstanding added-value rotations at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center and Prospect ECHN Health System.

I love training family doctors at the Eastern Connecticut Family Medicine Residency.

The positive aspects of training here are too numerous to count, but here are some of my favorites.
