ECHN Green Volunteer Team
Once a week, team members clean up grounds, parking lots and parking garages at Manchester Memorial Hospital and Rockville General Hospital.
Laboratory
Plastic reagent containers are recycled in all of the laboratory departments.
Engineering
Working with third-party companies, our engineering department recycles old batteries, ballasts and bulbs as well as some of the oils used for equipment.
Information Technology
Working with a third-party company, our IT department recycles old computer equipment.
Supplies
We are committed to recycling Massimo disposable pulse ox units moving forward.
Environmental Services
We use eco-friendly bathroom cleaners, cleansers, general purpose cleaners, Good Sense cleaners, and Stride floor cleaner. We have also implemented a new floor finish that is a green-friendly chemical.
We uses single-stream recycling for all products with a recycling logo – plastic, paper and cans. We also use “roll-less,” toilet paper – no cardboard insert inside.
We confirm that all new patient shower curtains are made from recycled materials.
When discarding bodily fluids we use body fluid solidifier to makes it a safer and cleaner process. This product is used throughout the industry to help with water sewage.
Biomed
We sell back some old/outdated medical equipment to vendors for parts to be recycled and/or reused.
Food and Nutrition
Morrison Healthcare participates in a food waste program to reduce the amount of waste when prepping food and decreasing the amount of leftover food at the end of each shift.
Manchester Memorial Hospital and Rockville General Hospital kitchens recycle all corrugated cardboard as well as empty glass, metal, and plastic food containers. In addition, all hot beverage cups are made from recycled paper products.
A new, more energy efficient dishwasher was installed at Rockville General Hospital to save on water, electricity and chemicals.
Pharmacy
We use a reverse distributor that takes away expired/unusable medications so they do not go to waste. Paper, plastics and cardboard are also recycled.
Utilities
We underwent a big energy savings initiative to upgrade all lighting at Manchester Memorial Hospital and Rockville General Hospital to LED. This includes parking lot lights.
Infoshred
All HIPAA/confidential paper put into Infoshred Bins is brought to their secured facility and shredded, baled and then sent to a mill to be recycled.
Medical Imaging
We recycle all IV contrast bottles, power injector syringe packaging and surgical plastic trays.
