The cause of sleep problems can be discovered through a sleep study, which is conducted overnight in a quiet wing of the hospital. You settle in a private, homelike room, where you can read or watch TV until you fall asleep.
While you sleep, monitors measure your brain wave activity, breathing, heart rhythm, eye movements, chest movements, arm and leg movements, and oxygen level. In the morning, you go home or to work, and the data collected is analyzed.
For certain patients a home sleep study may be appropriate. Your doctor or a sleep specialist can help determine which type of test is right for you. The ECHN Sleep Disorders Center can provide you with either option.
Appointments for sleep studies are made with a doctor’s referral. Download an order form for a sleep study
