Outpatient Surgery


Outpatient surgery – also called ambulatory surgery or one-day surgery – includes all surgeries and procedures that do not require an overnight hospital stay. At ECHN, an impressive number of surgeries can be done on a one-day basis without the need for overnight hospitalization.

Outpatient surgery at ECHN is possible due to:
  • Advances in surgical techniques, including smaller incisions for a wide range of procedures
  • Advances in general anesthesia, allowing patients to wake faster and feel more clear-headed after surgery
  • Advances in local anesthesia, which in some cases eliminates the need for general anesthesia by numbing just the part of the body on which the procedure is being performed
  • The expertise of ECHN physicians at both Manchester Memorial Hospital and Rockville General Hospital in robotic and minimally invasive surgery techniques, including the da Vinci® robot
