How the Admissions Process Works
When faced with having to choose a nursing home, it's important for an individual and/or family to visit different facilities and observe the staff and residents. Once the selection has been made for first, second, and third choices of a nursing home, the next step is to submit applications to each.
Families who wait until the last minute to submit an application are heartbroken when they learn there may be a six-month to one-year waiting period. Submitting an application automatically places a person on the waiting list for admission to a nursing home, but it does not oblige the family to take the first opening.
Under state law, if a person makes it to the top of the list but is not yet ready, his or her name simply remains there and the next person is admitted. However, when that person is ready, he or she will already be at the top of the list and can take the next opening that is available.
Even though many of us would like to keep our loved ones with us, sometimes that just isn’t an option, and none of us can predict the future. Therefore, being prepared can help everyone through this very awkward period.
