Acupuncture at the Women's Center for Wellness
A licensed acupuncturist is available for appointments at the Women's Center for Wellness. Acupuncture is an increasingly popular choice as a complementary therapy and is endorsed by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the federal focal point for biomedical research in the U.S.
According to NIH, clinical studies have shown that acupuncture is effective for treatment of nausea caused by surgical anesthesia and cancer chemotherapy, as well as for dental pain following surgery.
Studies also found that acupuncture is useful by itself or combined with conventional therapies to treat:
- Addictions
- Headaches
- Menstrual cramps
- Tennis elbow
- Fibromyalgia
- Myofascial pain
- Osteoarthritis
- Lower back pain
- Carpal tunnel syndrome
- Asthma
Acupuncture also may aid in stroke rehabilitation and in pain relief following surgery.
There are about 1,000 acupuncture points on the body; the more commonly used ones perform more than one function. The Food and Drug Administration approved acupuncture for use by licensed practitioners in 1996, and requires that the needles be used only once.
A little pinch may be felt when the hair-thin needles are inserted, but many individuals feel no pain at all. Each session lasts about an hour and costs between $70 and $115; the cost is sometimes covered by insurance. The number of treatments depends on the condition.
