What is Minimally Invasive Surgery?
Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) usually involves making tiny incisions, sometimes no more than a quarter-inch in length. This results in less trauma to the body versus an open incision. Robotic Surgery is a form of MIS.
Sometimes, ports are inserted through these incisions allowing the surgeon to introduce instrumentation into the body cavity. One of these incisions is used for a tiny camera so the surgeon and staff can view the operation from a flat panel monitor.
For other MIS surgeries, techniques and tools are used that disrupt the body integrity as little as possible.
Minimally Invasive techniques reduce the trauma associated with surgical procedures so patients recover faster. There are many benefits to choosing Minimally Invasive Surgery over traditional surgery:

What is a da Vinci® Robot?
Robotic surgery is a type of Minimally Invasive Surgery. “Minimally Invasive” means that instead of operating on patients through large incisions, we use miniaturized surgical instruments that fit through a series of quarter-inch incisions. When performing surgery with the da Vinci® Si™- the world’s most advanced surgical robot- these miniaturized instruments are mounted on three separate robotic arms, allowing the surgeon maximum range of motion and precision. The da Vinci®’s fourth arm contains a magnified high-definition 3-D camera that guides the surgeon during the procedure.
The surgeon controls these instruments and the camera from a console located in the operating room. Placing their fingers into the master controls, they are able to operate all four arms of the da Vinci simultaneously while looking through a stereoscopic high-definition monitor that literally places them inside the patient, giving them a better, more detailed 3-D view of the operating site than the human eye can provide.
Every movement they make with the master controls is replicated precisely by the robot. When necessary, the surgeon can even change the scale of the robot’s movements: If they selects a three-to-one scale, the tip of the robot’s arm will move just one inch for every three inches the surgeon’s hand moves. And because of the console’s design, the surgeon’s eyes and hand are always perfectly aligned with the view of the surgical site, minimizing surgeon fatigue.
The ultimate effect is to give the surgeon unprecedented control in a minimally invasive environment. Utilizing this advanced technology, our surgeons are able to perform a growing number of complex urological, gynecological and general surgical procedures.

Manchester Memorial Hospital has been chosen as the sixth Colorectal Robotic Surgery Training Center in the United States, the only Colorectal Epicenter in the Northeast. This recognition places the Manchester Memorial Hospital Robotic Surgery program in an elite category of excellent patient care and outcomes.
Dr. David Walters, a highly regarded colorectal surgeon, leads the Manchester Memorial Hospital Colorectal Epicenter program. Dr. Walters is a dedicated, excellent surgeon who has a love of teaching and sharing his expertise.
Furthermore, as an official Epicenter Training Site, Manchester Memorial Hospital will host colorectal surgeons from across the nation as they study specialized surgical techniques by observing robotic colorectal surgeries.
