Low Dose CT Lung Screening

ECHN is proud to announce it is now offering Low Dose CT lung screenings at its Evergreen Imaging location in South Windsor. Evergreen Imaging can be reached at 860.533.4600 for scheduling appointments.

Who is a good candidate for lung cancer screening? The National Lung Screening Trial (NLST) criteria are:

  • a current or former smoker (former smokers having quit within the past 15 years)
  • and in the age group from 55 to 74 years
  • and with a smoking history of at least 30 pack-years (1 pack/day for 30 years, 2 packs per day for 15 years, etc.)
  • and no history of lung cancer

Radiation Therapy

Radiation therapy is when high doses of radiation are used to kill cancer cells and shrink tumors. The driving force behind the creation of Eastern Connecticut Cancer Institute, in collaboration with Community CancerCare, was to expand radiation therapy for residents living east of the river. Our radiation services include leading-edge therapies like Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) and Brachytherapy. IMRT utilizes medical imaging technology to allow radiation to be more precisely focused on tumors. Brachytherapy is a procedure in which tiny radioactive "seeds" are implanted directly into the body, destroying cancerous tissue while having as little impact as possible on healthy tissue. Brachytherapy is currently used to treat prostate and breast cancer with treatment of other site-specific cancers on the horizon.

The John A. DeQuattro Cancer Center features leading-edge radiation therapy procedures such as:

  • Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), a highly sophisticated treatment involving software and medical imaging technology to allow radiation to be more precisely focused on tumors
  • Brachytherapy, a high-tech procedure in which tiny radioactive "seeds" are implanted directly into the body, reducing the impact of radiation therapy on healthy tissue while destroying the cancerous tissue.
