ECHN Welcomes Walden at New South Windsor Clinic for Treating Eating Disorders

Aug 29, 2012 -  Walden Behavioral Care, LLC of Waltham, Mass., a leading hospital for treating eating disorders, and Eastern Connecticut Health Network (ECHN), a not-for-profit community-based healthcare system, announced today that they will hold an open house on Thursday, Sept. 20, 2012, from 4 to 7 p.m.  at Walden’s new clinic located on ECHN’s medical office campus, 2400 Tamarack Ave., South Windsor.

Key speakers at the open house will be Dennis G. O'Neill, M.D., chairman of ECHN's Board of Trustees; and Stuart L. Koman, Ph.D., president and CEO of Walden Behavioral Care.

“We are pleased to partner with Walden Behavioral Care, whose goal is to achieve lasting recovery for every patient,” said Dr. O’Neill.  “It is ECHN’s mission to improve the well-being of our communities by providing high-quality, compassionate healthcare that meets individual needs. This partnership is our latest venture in expanding access to specialized health care and in achieving our mission.”

“Planners at ECHN identified a service gap in eastern Connecticut, and we agreed that it needed to be addressed,” Dr. Koman said.  “We opened our clinic in South Windsor to address this gap.  Eating disorders are life-threatening illnesses and those who suffer from an eating disorder need someone to turn to for help.”

He added that, even though eating disorders affect many people, they often go undetected because of a lack of awareness not only by the public, but in medical communities. Anorexia is the most deadly of all psychiatric illnesses and binge eating, which is associated with obesity, places a major burden on individuals and the U.S. economy. The new clinic provides partial hospitalization care for adults ages 18 and above, and intensive outpatient care for adolescents ages 12 to 17. The partial hospitalization program is offered five days a week, and the outpatient program is offered three days a week. Patients who need more intensive treatment will be treated at Walden’s hospital and residential program in Waltham.

Walden has several satellite clinics in Massachusetts, but the new clinic is Walden’s first in Connecticut. ECHN serves 19 towns in eastern Connecticut.
