ECHN Community Health Education Programs For December

Eastern Connecticut Health Network (ECHN) offers free health education programs at various locations. These programs are intended to be helpful and interesting to community members.

Binge Eating Disorder (BED): Myths, Facts & Treatment Options. Binge eating disorder is characterized by compulsive overeating in which people consume huge amounts of food while feeling out of control and powerless to stop. Join Kelly Stellato, MS, RD, LDN, on Monday, December 3, from 6-7:30 p.m., in the ECHN Community Education Room at 2600 Tamarack Avenue, South Windsor, as she explains the difference between BED and normal overeating. She will also discuss the factors that lead to binge eating, the health risks associated with the disorder and the treatment options now available in eastern Connecticut. Diabetic Foot Screening. This program is designed for individuals who have been diagnosed with diabetes. It includes evaluation of foot circulation, temperature and sensation. Toenails, calluses and open sores will be checked, and education and recommendations for proper foot care will be provided. Podiatrist Donna Boccelli, DPM, will perform the screening at the ECHN Center for Wound Healing at Manchester Memorial Hospital on Monday, December 3, between 1 and 4 p.m. Please use the Guard Street entrance. A diabetes educator will be on hand to answer questions about diabetes self-management. There is no cost for the screening, but an appointment must be made by calling 860.533.2903.

Finding the Right Fit.  Are you a candidate for a partial knee replacement? Join orthopedic surgeon Vipul Dua, MD, on Tuesday, December 11, from 6-7:30 p.m., in the ECHN Community Education Room at 2600 Tamarack Avenue, South Windsor, as he discusses the advances in total versus partial knee replacement and the “custom” total knee prosthesis. Laughter Yoga: For the Ha-Ha Health of It! Laughter is the best medicine. Join certified laughter yoga instructor Donna Schneider, MSW, LCSW, on Monday, December 17, from 6-7 p.m., in the ECHN Community Education Room at 2600 Tamarack Avenue, South Windsor. She will guide you through a series of deep breathing, light-hearted exercises that will help reduce your stress level, lower your blood pressure, strengthen your immune system, elevate mood and tickle your funny bone. Laughter yoga has been endorsed by Oprah and Dr. Oz as a “feel good exercise anyone can do.” Wear comfortable clothing, and bring your sense of humor.
