About Manchester, CT

Manchester is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 58,241 at the time of the 2010 census.
Settled by English colonists in 1672, the Town of Manchester was initially an agricultural community, but due to its river and brooks, the town was able to provide power for the paper, lumber and textile industries. In 1838 the Cheney family opened a silk mill that quickly became the world’s largest, and by 1920 had turned Manchester into a vibrant industrial community. Today, the mill owners’ and workers’ houses, along with mill buildings themselves, are now used for housing and form a National Landmark Historic District. Manchester now is a vital part of the East of the River area and a retail, employment and residential center for north central Connecticut.
